I have only owned the car for 7 months, and is under warranty - the DMF is covered fortunately. However, they will only replace it when it fails. Take a short hose say a 3 foot garden hose. Hold one end to your ear. Other end search around the muffler and flywheel cover. If you get it sorted quickly you may save the starter. My wifes car had the same thing, I had to put a new flywheel and clutch in (£300) and took me a day and a half.
